How Healthy Habits + Conscious Choices Can Help Create New Ways of Doing + Being

What is it that you’re desiring more of in this New Year?

As this new beginning arrives, take the time to really lean in and ask yourself what is it that you want more of in your life in the next 365 days.

Is it more joy, laughter, and love?
Is it more forgiveness, respect, and peace?
Is it more time alone in solitude to reflect — a slower pace, a new way of living?
Is it to connect more with your soul tribe and the people that make you feel alive?

Making conscious choices can help you create new ways of doing and being. These choices become habits. And these habits can help you get closer to what it is you really desire for your life and for yourself.

And the thing is, this doesn't have to feel like an overwhelming or difficult undertaking. It just takes one choice and one step at a time.

Making seemingly small choices and changes can create powerful change in so many areas of our lives — today, tomorrow, and far into the future.

So how can we begin to invite these parts of ourselves into our lives each and every day?

Creating Healthy Habits to Improve Your Quality of Life

All the little things you do every day are what become your habits. These seemingly small and repetitive behaviors are often automatic. You do them without even really giving them much thought.

But what happens if you start paying attention to what you do regularly? What do you notice about your patterns? Are there ones you’d like to change? Habits you’d like to embrace?

Once you’re aware of your patterns, and you’ve defined which ones you’d like to change — it’s time to make a plan. For example, if you desire more solitude, how can you adjust your schedule and cultivate designated time for yourself each and every day?

Make a plan for:

  • Which actions you will take to help you reach those goals
  • Choosing how you can support yourself to continue to make healthy choices despite unexpected situations or during times of stress
  • Defining what you will need to be successful

It can also be helpful to take note of your patterns of distraction. Maybe it's binge-watching TV shows, having just one more drink to numb out, or scrolling through social media. Begin to discover how you can begin replacing them with something that puts you on your path toward your goal. Making this conscious decision to lean away from our distractions allows us to focus on what we really wish to be focusing on and creates possibility.

When these actions start to feel like a challenge, try imagining yourself enjoying the rewards from your efforts in the future. This can help you make decisions that keep you on the path to your goals. Imagine how this goal or change you’re aiming for might enhance your life and well-being.

Bring More Joy Into Your Life: Making Decisions That Feel Good

When you make a choice it should make you feel good. Alive. Completely connected to your values and your authentic self. So begin to take notice when your decisions lead to things that feel good to you. When do you feel joyful? Is it when you’re making time to dance with your children in the kitchen? When you’re spending time in nature? Setting aside time to enjoy the company and a good laugh with a friend?

Think about a few recent decisions you’ve made.

  • How did each one of these decisions turn out?
  • How did these choices make you feel?
  • Were these decisions in alignment with your values? If not, does this tell you something important?

Pay attention to what makes you feel good. YOU help create your destiny. When we’re living in a state of flow and ease, we’re more joyful, expressive, and loving and create connections more easily. Look for answers inside of you and let them guide you. And if you’re not happy with your decision, all you can do is decide what to do next. Ask yourself: what did I learn from this? What can I do differently next time?

The important thing is that you take action. When these actions are in alignment with your values and goals — the results can be rewarding beyond your imagination.

Making Conscious Choices to Create New Ways of Being and Living

Conscious decisions are made using all the information you have available to you while understanding the risks and implications of each decision.

Whenever a new opportunity arises, it can be so easy to only look at the temporary benefits of what a choice may give to us. Instant gratification. But in doing this, we might find ourselves heading in a direction or in a place we don’t want to be. But the good news is, we can learn to become more aware of ourselves and what we truly want so we can shift from simply reacting — to making a conscious choice.

When you’re reacting from an unconscious place, you tend to make decisions with little to no thought at all. But when you take the time to reflect on what you’re saying, thinking, or doing — it helps us make more conscious choices.

When you make choices from a place of conscious consideration and take into account exactly what it is you’re trying to create, you’re better able to make choices from a space of authenticity and integrity. We have the power to make the choice to make better choices. To make decisions that direct us toward our personal goals. Each and every choice affects whether you are moving toward these goals, or away from them.

So ask yourself:

  • What do I want more of in my life?
  • What are my intentions? What am I trying to achieve?
  • Are my choices leading me down the path I want to be on?
  • Does this decision support my well-being and integrity?
  • Is my choice in alignment with my goals and values?
  • Is it helping to better my life and those around me?

Will you choose to scroll on your phone and put off taking that next step toward your goal? Will you choose to go to that meditation class or decide not to go at the last minute? Will you choose to speak to yourself in a loving and caring way or unkindly when things don’t go to plan?

When you answer these questions with a conscious awareness you’re better able to make the choices that are best for yourself — and the ones you love — in the long run.

One Step at a Time, One Choice at a Time, and One Action at a Time

Movement begins with small choices you make every single day. These choices present themselves to you countless times throughout your day. So start making conscious choices that direct your intention toward the good you want to achieve.

Because habits and patterns are simply choices that we make on a regular, consistent basis.

It doesn't have to feel overwhelming or difficult, it just takes one step at a time, one choice at a time, and one action at a time.

These small steps push us closer to our goals. Ultimately, they help create the changes we wish to see in ourselves. The lives we want to be living. We have to be willing to commit and show up for ourselves. And the thing is, it doesn’t matter how small you think these actions are. These seemingly little actions add up to something big.

So learn from the decisions you make. Take into consideration what is most important to you while making these decisions. Your choices and decisions shape your life. The results depend on what matters most to you — a reflection of your constant conscious decisions.

Then follow the nudges of your heart in that direction. A new way of living and being is just one action or choice around the corner.
