How the Sacral Chakra Facilitates Creativity + Pleasure in Life
Sep 21, 2022As humans, we’re creative and wildly expressive beings.
We love to be playful — at any age — and create deeply intimate relationships with people we feel connected to.
But at times, we might feel uninspired, disconnected, or lack the ability to express ourselves.
There could be many reasons for this. Some are big reasons, some are small and seemingly insignificant.
The significance of energy though is not a small one.
Sacral Chakra Meaning: The Svadhisthana
Color: Orange
Element: Water
The Svadhishthana chakra — our 2nd chakra — is positioned in the lower abdomen, about four fingers below the belly button. The word Svadhishthana means “dwelling place of the Self”. Its energetic attributes include:
- Sensuality, intimacy, and pleasure
- Creativity and self-expression
- Healthy and balanced emotions
- Feelings of self-worth
The sacral chakra enables us to shape and design the life we want and desire. The sacral chakra influences intimacy, and expression of our innermost wants, needs, and desires.
When the sacral chakra’s energy is balanced, you can source this energy for creative expression, intentional movement, desire, pleasure, and facilitating healthy relationships. You will be able to express your wants and needs freely and make pleasure a priority.
The element of water is all about flexibility and flow. The energy of this element helps us let go when necessary, and to accept change.
Balanced vs Unbalanced Sacral Chakra
A blocked or stagnant sacral chakra can create feelings of emotional instability. You may experience mood swings, have trouble controlling or expressing your emotions, or feel numb to them altogether.
You might experience a loss of imagination or creativity, emotional dissatisfaction, or low libido. You may feel a lack of desire, an inability to express yourself creatively, or a lack of control and uncertainty — unable to cope with changes in life.
If the energy of your sacral chakra is out of balance you might also experience:
- Pain in the low back
- Hip issues
- Joint problems
- Spleen, bladder, and kidney issues
- Issues with the reproductive organs
- Fatigue
- Insecurity
- Emotional instability
- Fear of change
- Detachment
- Addictions
- Feeling unsafe or uncomfortable in your body
- Inability to experience emotional or physical intimacy
A low energy or blocked sacral chakra can create feelings of detachment from the self and from the people around you. Because of this, you may feel isolated, overwhelmed, anxious, and lonely. You may experience addictive behaviors and engage in escapism to avoid or numb these feelings.
When the sacral chakra is balanced and functioning optimally, one might feel vibrant, positive, content, satisfied, creatively uninhibited, and capable of deep intimacy and fulfilling relationships.
Our relationships with ourselves and the world will feel harmonious, warm, generous, desirable, pleasureful, and nurturing. It facilitates a feeling of freedom during play, intimacy, and creation as you express yourself in healthy uninhibited ways.
Sacral Chakra Balancing and Healing
You can help create balance and healthy energy flow in this chakra with creative expression and by honoring your body.
Here are some ways you can connect to the energy of the sacral chakra to promote a healthy energetic balance:
Affirmations
Affirmations can help to positively reprogram the subconscious and raise energetic vibrations. Some affirmations that may help balance the energy in the sacral chakra are:
- I am free to create
- My creativity knows no bounds
- I am passionate and fulfilled
- I deserve to feel the pleasures and abundance of life
Connect with Water
Since this chakra is associated with the water element — connecting with water helps promote balance in the Svadhishthana Chakra.
- Go for a swim or put your feet in a body of water such as a river, lake, or ocean
- Go outside to dance in the rain
- Take a cool shower or a warm bath
- Soak your feet in water with a few drops of essential oils
Essential oils that may help balance the sacral chakra include sandalwood, ylang-ylang, jasmine, and neroli.
Play and Create With Your Inner Child
As human beings, we were born to create.
As we get older, we’re forced to conform and follow the rules so we can fit in. In this process, we can lose this creative energy without nurturing it. As a child, we weren’t concerned with how we were judged by our creations. We weren’t worried about what other people would think, what other people were doing, or about perfection. We just did it for the love of creating.
As adults, we may feel self-conscious about creatively expressing ourselves or being playful. Afraid to be judged for our expression, and creation, or afraid we’ll fail in our artistic endeavors.
To open your sacral chakra, you must be willing to take risks. You must (try!) not be afraid of the judgment of others or of failure. Because it’s not about succeeding. It’s about expression. It’s about putting what’s in your heart and soul into words, dance, painting, or other healthy expressions that feel right for you.
Channel your inner child and do something you loved to do when you were young.
So play, create, and love with abandon!
Sacral Chakra Meditation
Citrine, tiger's eye, carnelian, moonstone, and jasper are stones that can be incorporated into any of these rituals.
This chakra meditation can help you tune into your sacral chakra’s energy center. Hold a crystal or stone of your choice as you focus on your sacral chakra’s free-flowing energy.
Start by laying on your back and getting comfortable in your space. Gently let your eyes close, and take a deep breath in.
And exhale.
Repeat.
As you connect to your breath, silently repeat the sacral chakra mantra “vam.”
Place your chosen crystal over the area of the sacral chakra.
As you stay connected to your breath, visualize yourself floating on top of a body of water. Imagine waves rolling underneath you and rocking you gently.
Imagine the warm amber color of the sun filling up the space of your sacral chakra with a healing, balanced light.
Every time you inhale, imagine this orange light growing larger and larger with every breath. Continue until your entire being is surrounded by this warm and creative energy. Allow your sacral chakra to absorb this light and fully awaken.
Imagine this light nourishing your creative self with its energy as it surrounds you like a shield.
As each wave comes and goes, release the energy that no longer serves you along with them.
Take another deep breath in.
Exhale.
Honor all that is. For it has brought you here.
When you’re ready, bring your awareness back to your breath. Gently move your body as you come back into the present moment — taking care to come back in your own time.
Before healing your sacral chakra it’s recommended you balance your root chakra first.
Living From a Space of Pleasure and Creativity in My Own Life
I always try and remember to live my own life from a place of pleasure, play, and creativity
I recently danced for 4 hours straight at a Greek wedding a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing!!! I connect with the element of water by swimming in the ocean, and I love taking baths with salts and oils. I play and dance with my daughters in our kitchen and move my body in conscious and consistent ways. I’m always trying to listen to what my body, heart, and mind are desiring to create.
I’d love to help inspire you to re-discover your passions and creative desires so you can live a life in alignment with your soul.
